Submission to the Senate Inquiry into Nature Positive (Environment Information Australia) Bill 2024 [Provisions] and related bills
Australia’s Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act are reviewed every ten years.
In his 2020 review, Professor Graeme Samuel wrote: “the law was “ineffective and not fit to address current or future environmental challenges.”
In this submission, Lighter Footprints calls for improvements to the Nature Postive Bill 2024 including: Defining “Nature positive” to match world’s best practice, strengthening the independence of the EPA and the EPA requirements to listen and act, removing the Ministerial Call-in power, stopping unregulated deforestation; and including a climate trigger.
