Although Lighter Footprints had originally planned a meet-up in Hawthorn to mark this event, there are now plans for a larger, co-ordinated action in Melbourne's CBD. You might have seen recent reports that our Federal Government makes more money from beer drinkers than it does from the gas export tax. Around 80% of the gas we dig up is exported, but research shows that “while gas companies have made roughly $A149 billion from these exports in just four years, only a small percentage of this profit has been taxed”.
Does that pass the pub test? We don’t think so!
So on May 8 (Mates Day!), we’re encouraging folk to join the wider climate movement in the CBD – and raise a glass in support of the climate movement’s nationwide push for stronger gas export taxes!
Join friends and allies from the Australian Conservation Foundation, GetUp!, Friends of the Earth, Environment Victoria, and Green Music Australia. Meet at City Square, Melbourne, at 5:30pm, and then head on to Young and Jackson’s!
